Where TypeScript wins

  • Shared types. One User definition across React, Node and React Native is worth more than any single language feature.
  • Hiring. Almost any web engineer has shipped TypeScript. The pool is enormous and the floor is high.
  • Refactoring. TypeScript’s structural type system plus modern IDEs makes renames, signature changes and API migrations safe at scale.
  • Ecosystem. npm is messy but it is also bottomless. For most product features, the library exists.

Where TypeScript hurts

  • Runtime performance. Node is fast, but Go is several times faster on the kind of CPU-bound work that shows up in data pipelines, batch jobs and high-throughput APIs.
  • Build complexity. tsconfig, transpilation, ESM/CJS interop, bundler choices — there is always something to maintain.
  • Type system escape hatches. any, as, // @ts-ignore: easy to introduce, hard to find later. Discipline at code-review is the only real fix.

Our 2026 default stack

  • Frontend: React + Next.js (App Router) or Vite + React for SPAs
  • Backend: Node.js with Fastify or NestJS; TypeScript strict mode
  • Mobile: React Native (Expo) — shares types, components and validation with web
  • Validation: Zod schemas as the single source of truth
  • ORM: Prisma or Drizzle for SQL; both emit TypeScript types
  • Infrastructure: Pulumi (TypeScript) where the team is mostly TS; Terraform where it is mostly DevOps

When we reach for another language

  • Go — high-throughput APIs, sidecar processes, anything CPU-bound. Concurrency model is cleaner than Node for some workloads.
  • Python — ML pipelines, data engineering, anything that touches scientific libraries.
  • Swift / Kotlin — native mobile work where React Native bridges become a bottleneck.
  • PHP (Laravel) — when a client’s hosting environment is fixed and Node is not viable, Laravel remains a strong choice with good TypeScript-equivalent ergonomics via PHPStan.

The one rule we hold

Strict mode is non-negotiable. "strict": true in tsconfig.json, noUncheckedIndexedAccess, noImplicitOverride. Without strict mode TypeScript is JavaScript with extra steps. With strict mode it pays for itself within a quarter.

For most web/API workloads, yes — the ecosystem, hiring pool and refactoring tools are better than any single-language alternative. For CPU-bound, low-latency or systems-level work, Go or Rust beat TypeScript on raw throughput per dollar.

Should I share types between frontend and backend?

Yes — but generate them from a single source of truth like an OpenAPI spec, tRPC router or Prisma schema. Hand-syncing types across packages is a maintenance trap; the first month is fine, the sixth is not.
